2013 was a memorable year for social media. Chris Hadfield tweeted his way to rock star astronaut fame, Oreo dunked in the dark and Oxford Dictionaries annointed ‘selfie’ as word of the year.
In addition, social media platforms continued their rise in popularity. Facebook passed the 1.11 billion monthly user mark last May and Google Plus inched closer to Twitter as the second largest social media network.
Here are a few highlights that surprised me:
- 23% of Facebook users check their account more than five times per day
- Twitter’s fastest growing age demographic is 55 to 64 years olds, registering an increase in active users of 79%
- Google Plus skews male, a demographic
